Salem Information

Salem is the capital of and third largest city in Oregon. Located in the center of the Willamette Valley alongside the Willamette River, it became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851, and was incorporated in 1857.

The city is home to Willamette University and Corban College, and is home to the main campus of Chemeketa Community College. Other schools include the Chemawa Indian School, Oregon School for the Blind and the Oregon School for the Deaf.

The state of Oregon is the largest employer in the city, while Salem Hospital is the largest private employer. Other major employers include the, a T-Mobile Calling Center, , Roth's Family Markets, GE Security, Wachovia Securities, NORPAC Foods, Inc, Willamette University and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde's Spirit Mountain Casino.

Salem, Oregon, is has many cultural points of interest including an annual World Boat Festival, The Salem Art Fair and Festival which takes place at Bush's Pasture Park and the Oregon State Fair which offers exhibits, carnival rides, fair fare and horse shows. Some of the cities museums include the Madison Hill Museum and Hallie Ford Museum of Art. The city is also home to Mahonia Hall, registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
